Families

In our work at Seedlings we come in contact with a wide variety of families and we get to know loads of different family members. The children  are at the heart of their families, and it is the families that are the children’s first educators. So this term this is where our focus for our work with the children is going to be.

In taking ‘Families’ as our theme, everything we do with the children connected with this topic will be supporting their development in each of the three prime areas of children’s development identified in the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) curriculum. The first prime area is Communication and Language. Well, it’s at home with their family, talking, playing, laughing and enjoying stories, rhymes and songs, that children first learn to communicate and talk. Their home environment sets the pattern for their personal, social and emotional development as well. In the work we will do with the children this term we will be extending and strengthening their knowledge of what family is as we enhance their skills in both these prime areas. And because we’re a Montessori setting, working to the Montessori curriculum, where all learning is associated with some kind of physical movement, we’ll be encouraging their development in the third prime area, that of physical development, as well.
